Kitchenaid, Costco BlueStar or Costco NXR 36" range?

renosarefunOctober 14, 2013

We're in the process of selcting all our appliances which we will be purchasing next weekend and when it comes to the range we trying to decide between the; I know there are several night and day differences between the kitchenaid and the Bluestar-NXR in regards to electronics, sealed vs non sealed, btu capacity, dual fuet etc, which is the reason for my thread. My biggest concern with the Kitchenaid are the lcd display, while it outperforms the other two ranges in options, it maybe the first item to break down. I only considered it since it's pricing would be in line with the ranges sold at Costco.

I would say Bluestar. I'm curious do you live in or near Canada? Last I checked Costco only offered Bluestar in Canada.

Thanks for the reply DJ493;

Yes I live in Canada and at present the Costco 36" RCS Bluestar is selling for $3199.99 free shipping and it's not on sale.

Things my wife doesn't like about the Costco Bluestar;

Highest burner rating is 15k
Doesn't have a self clean oven.
Only two racks in the oven.
Not able to tell oven temperature

I would put bs's 15k burner up against ka 20k burner anytime, any place.

No self clean is a disadvantage to some for sure.

Buy an additional rack.

Buy a good quality over thermometer.

My wife and I went to a dealer that had both models in stock in a mock up kitchen and were told the following.

The BS range has a better flame but the 20k btu burner of the KA is much stronger then the 15K star shaped burner of the BS.

The side and front panels of the BS will get much hotter then the KA due to less insulation.

The BS oven was not concidered to be a "true" convection oven when compared to the KA, which for me, I didn't really understand.

The fact that the burners as well as oven will be much more work to clean was a real turn off for my wife. Keep in mind we have two kids at home that also like to cook but make a real mess while they're at it and don't like to clean up afterwards.

The 15K burners on the BS were not strong enough for some homeowners, but that boils down to cooking styles/personal preference.

The BS is not able to view cooking temperatures, but that is not a deal breaker, only a set back.

I believe my wife is going to go with the KA.

Personal preference is important and a powerful factor.

Good judgement comes from experience
Experience comes from bad judgement.

Buy an extended warranty on anything that proclaims "self cleans" and contains electronics.
