Caulking narrow/deep -- backer rod or not?

attofaradNovember 26, 2013

I will be silicone caulking the gap between my glass vanity top and the tile above it. The gap is about 1/8" high, but maybe 3/4"=1" deep (tile thickness plus float).

Should I just caulk it and not worry? Should I try to get caulk all
the way in there? Should I put something in there first, and just
caulk the surface? I haven't seen any backer rod that is thin enough to use.

For a 1/8" gap, there's no need for backer rod. You don't need to fill the complete depth. In general you want it deeper than the gap is wide. If you can fill it 3/16" to 1/4" deep and all will be well.

Thanks mongoct. I did it tonight. Okay job, but my
wife will tell you that my caulking is nothing to write
home about.

In general, how does one get rid of the thin smear
that is left to the sides of the caulk line? The tile
is 3D, so I couldn't really run a tape line.
Can you let it cure a few hours then wipe with
mineral spirits?

I used regular isopropyl alcohol with fairly good results when I was using silicone caulk. But that was when the caulk was still damp.

Next time, push the caulk into the groove, then spray it with Windex. Spit on your finger and slide it along the caulk. The excess caulk will gob up perfectly and not stick to the splash or top. Use a paper towel to wipe up the Windex without touching the tooled bead.

I do this all the time and my caulking is extraordinary.
