Compressor out on built-in KitchenAid side-by-side

gaylOctober 6, 2012

We recetnly bought a home with a built-in sxs KitchenAid. Not more than 2 weeks after purchase, we discovered that the complressor is out. It is a vacation home, so we weren't here when the problem was first discovered, but now we need to figure something out. We have a Home Warranty, but I think they will only give us a small amount toward a new refrigerator. The home was built in 2004...should we replace the compressor or bite the bullet and buy a new refrigerator? This is not a full-time residence, and has been occupied very little over the past 8 years....less than a month a year, although someone was checking on it weekly. Any advice?

Generally, cost to replace a compressor is high enough that you are better off purchasing a new refrigerator.

If the fridge is truly a built-in (i.e. not just a freestanding fridge with a cabinet surround), the cost to replace it is at very bottom, $5000, plus installation. If it is wider than 36", it will cost more than that. How much will it cost to replace the compressor?

Thanks for your responses. Yes, it is a true built-in and bigger than 36". We should know early next week what the warranty company is willing to do and what the costs are for the repair. They have not been very responsive in getting back to us. You'd think with a refgrigerator in the desert, they might move things along a bit faster!
