Screen goes White

randy427August 15, 2011

The monitor on my MIL'c HP laptop, running Windows 7, frequently goes totally white, even when she's just playing solitaire.

I've done a de-frag and a clean-up with Norton, but it still does it.

Any suggestions?

If you have access to a external monitor (or a friend), just plug the monitor into the laptop.
If it continues to work, the problem is in the display / screen.

Look near the clock in the lower right corner for a pennant style flag. Click or hover and see what it says there because Windows 7 has the capability to repair itself. Follow the link it will provide for hopefully a fix.

After a little more 'trying anything', I found that the Windows key will bring up the Start menu and Taskbar so she can continue working without much disruption. There's occasionally a faint, but non-functional, scroll bar on the right side of the screen
It seems to be acting like a virus or a program that is trying to initialize.

run malwarebytes on it just to be sure she does not have malware causing the problem, it is free and you just update it and run full scan.
