Floating floor over existing tile?

Sun-n-ClayNovember 29, 2011

I am considering replacing my tile floors with Karndean or some other floating vinyl/composite type floor planks. Can it go right over the tile, or does the floor tile have to be ripped up first? I currently have small tiles in the bathroom area and larger tiles in another area. It would be so much cheaper to put it over the tile, obviously, but would it be smooth?

This is the kind of flooring that doesn't use a separate underlay. I've installed it over stuck down linoleum without problem in my old house but never over tile with grout lines.

tehcnically yes. Yes but are you expecting to feel the grout lines through the new floor, later, when the new flooring slumps into the grooves of the old floor.

You might consider Kerlite. It's a thin porcelain material sold in sheets that can install right over your old tile.

Maybe with vinyl it's different, but I would never again put laminate over existing tile. My upstairs bath has laminate, and I can hear the tile underneath crackling, which means that water is getting underneath and loosening the tile. I'm going to have to have that bath gutted and redone at some point anyway, but I would never do laminate that way again.
