Help setting up DH's new laptop

lynnalexandraAugust 24, 2013

We've finally replaced my husband's dinosaur with a Dell Inspiron 14Z (incredibly sale at newegg for refurb). Windows 7, 64 bit, Home premium? Now I'm trying to set it up, remove crapware, load programs, etc.

I looked at posts from 2012 for some ideas of steps. Did those I thought I could do on my own, and now could use some help proceeding.

I made recovery and repair discs, and system image disk.

Am removing McAfee with the removal tool and will install Microsoft essentials. (I like Avast, but it caused a bsod on my own Dell Windows 7 laptop. Help at sysnative guided me to remove Avast on that computer. So I'll play it safe for now and not put it on my husband's.)

Will install superantispyware, spywareblaster, malwarebytes.

Will update all programs with a Secunia scan.

Where I could use help is in removing the bloatware. I downloaded pc decrapifier and will run shortly.

I also saw Zep's suggestion to download and run minitoolbox. So I did, but I don't know what to do with the results. Here they are:

**** End of log ****

Perhaps pc decrapifier will get rid of some of these - but I thought I'd list the results here. (Let me know if I should run minitools after running pc decrapifier).

I also wonder about .net framework. I'm sure it's on here now. Do I leave it and update - or get rid of it entirely?

Thank you.

PS: reviews on this are very mixed. Several mention the hassle of the dell stage. Can I remove this? Does anyone find it useful? My daughter has a Dell laptop too with windows 7 and Dell Stage. I wonder if it's part of what bogs down her laptop?

Not sure what Dell stage does, I'm looking into it. It does appear to run in the background as this one does too Dell Support Center (Version: 3.1.5907.16)

Thanks Zep,

I'm running into a few problems that have stalled me.

1 - I can't get a pc decrapifier download. I've gone to the links from several threads on this forum. And as careful as I try to be, it seems every time I click download, I'm getting some bogus program I don't want. I've downloaded pc decrapifier on other computers - so I think I'd know what it looks like and what looks fishy.

In the process of trying to download the couple of programs recommended on this forum, I may have gotten things I don't want. or maybe they were part of the original bloatware and they just didn't pop up until later.

I now have the following:

Free Download Manager (this got downloaded/created today - but that's all i could ascertain about this program). It may have come when attempting to get minitool box, or the pc decrapifier

Optimizer Pro (also created today)

Open It! (icon is blue box with white opened box inside)

In case any of these were necessary to download, install or run something I wanted, i won't remove the program until someone can give me some feedback about them.

On a positive note, I uninstalled McAfee completely and used Ninite to install several desired programs, including Microsoft Essentials, chrome, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and ccleaner. For some reason, Firefox did not download and install successfully so I'll try that again. And I need to get spywareblaster now.

Optimizer Pro (also created today)

Can you uninstall that from programs an features, I don't like Optimizer programs.

Here is a link that might be useful: pcdecrapifier.

I will try deleting optimizer pro from add/remove program.

And I'll try that link - right after my microsoft updates finish.

I keep getting a pop-up to download FLV MPlayer to continue. I'm not sure to continue what? Is this something I should have? I'm using internet explorer now just to do the microsoft updates?

Also, microsoft suggested many .net framework updates, xml services updates, silverlight update. Do I need these? Should I skip them and delete the older versions of each on my computer?

FLV MPlayer, it's possible that came down with optimizer pro, who knows. You don't really need it. I would not delete any .net frame work stuff for now and let the up dates come in.

I removed optimizer pro - and the other garbage snuck onto the laptop today.

I was able to install pc decrapifier - but all it did was give me a list of programs - there was no suggestion as to which was crapware and which was needed. I uninstalled games and a couple of others.

There are a couple I'm not sure about:

You could remove all of those without issue.

Once you've removed shortcuts from the desktop that you don't want to see, and stopped boot-up loading of unwanted programs and apps, any further effort is a waste of time.

There's no need to search out and remove inert programs that are just sitting there doing nothing. Such seek and destroy missions accomplish nothing and frequently result in deleting important files.

Snidely - good point about not removing things if they're not causing trouble - lest they turn out to have been needed. So I have left some things that I have no idea about.

I did delete Dell Stage - bc. it's a real pain - gets in the way all the time (my daughter who's had this on her laptop for 2 years confirmed that it's just in the way).

I did all the microsoft updates, ran a few antivirus, got rid of what I want to get rid of, and it's mostly good to go.

Here's the trouble that remains:

I can't get the printer working. It's a Canon Pixma MX850 - on the home network. I did not want to install the Canon disk bc. it has a ton of it's own bloatware. So I went to Canon and downloaded the driver - as well as the IJ utility software (I think that helps the computer find a printer on the network). Went to devices and printers, added the printer and made it the default printer. It shows up in printers and devices, but when I go to print something, it fails. Troubleshooting says the test page didn't print bc. something else is in the queue. But there is nothing else in the queue. I opened the queue from my pain desktop (that's connected to the printer) - and there's no documents in the queue. Went to the printer queue on DH's lapto; - it also shows nothing in the queue. I can print from other computers. Don't know what else to do.

And I just remembered that I did not see Java. It didnt come up as needing updating when I ran the Secunia scan. I am not sure which programs need it, but can imagine my husband being stumped if he tries to do something that needs Java and asks him to install. I'd like to install it for him. Got to remember that.

I also have a question about Microsoft Security Essentials. Twice now it found something bad - and I selected to remove the couple of files. Does this AV just run in the background or do I also need to run scans?

Thank you.

It runs in real time. You can also set MSE to run a scheduled scan, mine runs once a week. Open up the program and click on settings, just double click on the Icon in the task bar.

odd it's finding stuff all ready. Do you know what the name of the files were and there location, you know something like:

C:\Downloads\Freerip\freeripmp3-setup.exe a variant of Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Ask.D application

Can't help with the printer issue.

Hi, Zep,

I don't know what they the bad files were. I just had them removed. Guess I wasn't so surprised bc. all kinds of sneaky things got on my computer in my earlier attempts to download minitoolbox, pcdecrapifier and double driver (a program Raven had recommended last year to make copies of your drivers). I never got the double driver downloaded. I just assumed the bad files came with those unwanted programs.

I guess I'm so used to Firefox with adblock, that I was quite surprised at home aggressively things popped up and tried to get me to install stuff accidentally or redirect me. This was when using internet explorer. I began with that bc. it was the one browser that was already installed - so I used it to get those initial programs downloaded.

I'll have to come back to the getting the printer installed another time.
