Water temporarily staining granite?

tannie88October 28, 2013

Hello all. Hoping you have some insight. We just remodeled our master bath and seem to be having problems with the granite. When water sits on it for a bit, the granite gets a dark spot where the water/shaving cream/toothpaste, etc. was. The spot dissipates after the granite is dried. Our contractor says the granite was sealed and has a call into the granite guy. Any ideas as to what is causing this? Thanks!

Oh forgot to add a picture. This is what the stain looks like...dark spot in the middle of the photo.

As I believe I've read on this forum, a good stone sealer is does not prevent water from penetrating the stone. I have a sealed marble countertop that does this as well. Water penetrates the stone and darkens slightly until the stone dries. I have not seen any actual staining from it. Similarly I have a slate/quartzite tile floor in a few rooms and when I clean the floor it temporarily darkens until is dries. So, what you're showing seems to be normal.
