plan advice

rita_70August 20, 2014

Below is our first floor plan.

I really don't like that breakfast area is too open and right across from the entrance door and by the stairs - makes me feel like I'm seating in the hallway :(

I understand that there isn't much that can be done here to improve, but maybe something?

I was thinking that maybe I should make closet deeper and than it will "hide" / separate at least partially the entry foyer and the breakfast area? Or may be we should build kind of small arch to separate entry foyer from the rest of the home?

Note: The whole hallway has tiles (it's not clear from the picture). The rest of the house has hardwood.

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated!
Thank you!

Since the floor plan is a square, there's not much that can be done. The result is that the two major spaces are proportioned long and narrow, bowling-alley like. You will have to traverse through one space ( for example, dining) to access the other (living/family).

If you have 12' ceilings (or as tall as possible) it will help the interior proportions. Another improvement would be to add major "bumpos" (a technical term in architecture :-0 ) in the living/family space and in the similar part of the other major space to the right of the entry.

With 8' ceilings these spaces are going to feel very odd.

Good luck with your project.
