Laying out tile with random veining

kmcgOctober 4, 2012

I'm wondering if any of you have ideas about how to lay out marble look-alike tile (and these ideas could be based on natural marble as well, obviously). I have 12" square tiles to be laid on the floor, on the diagonal. Many of the tiles have veining going in biggish streaks across the tile, or across the corner of a tile. I assume I should avoid a situation where those streaks line up, but maybe I'm wrong. I'm afraid that having the veins go the same direction would look like I was trying to replicate a whole piece of marble, without success since the veins will never match up. So my hunch is that I should allow some to go the same direction, but to turn other tiles the other way.

How did you do it?

I saw a great set of pictures of real marble laid out in several ways like you describe, random, laid to flow into one another, and I think a middle of the road layout. I have look briefly and can't find the website. The matching made the layout look more flowing and soothing maybe more like a slab but not totally. The really random looked more dynamic. I would think that since there are some repeats in the manufactured patterns that maybe the random would be easier to make look good. Maybe the experts will weigh in here about this topic. Can you open a box and play around with a large layout somewhere unobstructed?
