Seeing daylight between studs.. normal?

SynlightAugust 13, 2012

We are building a home with a production builder. When we were touring the construction site this weekend, we notice that there are a couple of places where you can see daylight peeking through the double studs. Is this normal, or cause for concern?

Yes. Built-up posts, generally from two-five 2x material nailed appropriately, are structural supports, not air barriers. When they are on outside walls, the gaps may be caulked with acoustical caulking. However, don't expect such attention to air-sealing details unless you're paying extra for it.

Thank you guys! I may go behind them and caulk it myself if they don't.
