tub installations...what kind for alcove?

melissastarOctober 1, 2013

I'm confused about what kind of tub I can use in a small (60") alcove installation. I know that some are specifically made for this type of installation, but are there options? Can I use an undermount, with a narrow overlay around it? Or a drop-in? If so , what do I have to do make sure it's properly waterproofed? I see pictures with a whole variety of tubs used, but also comments about NOT doing certain ones in an alcove.

I would do one with the flange on three sides that is specifically made for alcove installation. A drop in, since the lip is higher than the surround, creates a channel for water to lay in next to the wall --they aren't the best if you want a shower, too. An undermount can work but the waterproofing needs to be done carefully around the deck. The simplest solution is to use a tub made for alcove installation. There are a lot to choose from .
