How-to help needed: glass shelves in a shower niche ??? BillV?

loves2cook4sixSeptember 25, 2012

I currently have a question I can't seem to find an answer to...

Due to a broken water pipe we are remodeling our master bathroom and we'd like to put a niche in the shower. We are using a reconstruction company that our insurance company gave us.

I know we need to line up the bottom and top of the niche with the wall tiles to get a nice stream lined look.

Where we're struggling is with the glass shelves. The tiling guy and crew supervisors, as well as myself, have been unable to find a way to install these so the tile maintains it's water impenertability. I've seen the suggestion to rest it on the tiles on the side of the niche but then how does the grout factor in. I would prefer not to use caulking as I really want the clean lines of the glass.

Can you help?

Just morter the glass in between two tiles on each side and grout it. Waterproofing a shower has nothing whatsoever to do with the tiles....their only job is to make it look pretty. Waterproofing is plastic or tarpaper attached to the studs before the cement boards go in or is a membrane applied to the face of the board before tiling.
