sunken patio as way to do a walkout/daylight basement on flat lot

hairmetal4everJuly 26, 2012

OK, I've seen this a few times and think it's a great idea, but have any of you done this or seen plans?

Say you have a flat lot or one with very little slope. And you want a walkout (daylight, if you prefer) basement. Rather than messing with trying to grade the property, why not place a sunken patio, with steps and a terrace, at the walkout exit, that then walks back up to grade? I have seen one or two homes in the past like this, and it really makes a nice serene outdoor spot, plus allows you to have the daylight basement...

We thought about doing something like that at our old house, but never did.
Chief concern is you need a way to handle water for sure....else you may find your basement filling with water from the outside terrace which will act as a swimming pool if not properly drained. Consider gravity too, as during a hurricane you will get lots of rain with no power to run a sump pump.

The sunken patio/basement walk out is very common here in Vancouver BC. Like AnnieDeighnaugh said, you have to provide a floor drain outside and make sure it can drain when needed.

Thomas Jefferson had a sunken lawn at his Poplar Forest home.

The second picture-- the one posted by young Gardner-- how would that space drain in a heavy rain without flooding the basement?

Looks really nice.
