Sliding glass doors for a beach home?

kooshballJuly 13, 2014

I am in the planning stage of a beach house design and build and I would like to use sliding glass doors for several reasons (amount of light, lack of swing) but I don't know how well they will seal in storms and perform over time.

Does anyone recommend a specific brand / model that will perform well in a coastal environment or should I look for hinged doors instead?

Thx

Where are you building? They make Impact Resistant Sliding Glass Doors if your area requires them.

I recommend what they call around here a beach package. That means stainless steel rollers rather than aluminum. The beach is hell on aluminum - salt and sand.

Hatteras Island is where the house will be...sound side.

We're doing French doors rather than sliders because of the sealing issue. We're in a desert area of Canada. Cold, dry and windy.

If we had a longer summer, I'd put in those accordion style doors so you could have the entire wall opened up. But it's a little expensive for something we'd use twice a year.

Actually a quality slider will seal better than a hinged door amberm. I would see no issues using a slider, just pick a high quality brand as they should use SS rollers which as mentioned is a must. They will require maintenance in keeping the tacks clean. You should be building with Impact Rated products where you are building so multi-point locks should be a standard in this package.

The well built products today work well in either a clear-story or extended overhang configurations.
