Reducing hardness to less than 3 grains.

lawlopezJuly 15, 2012

The Miele owners manual for the Futura Crystal says that if your tap water hardness is above (4 gr/gal [US]), the water should be softened.

My water seems to be about 3 gr/gal.

I'm thinking of getting a crystal and it has a water softener.

What happens if I soften it anyway to less that 3 gr/gal ?

Does it do something good ?

Does it do something bad ?

Or does it do nothing ?

I have a Miele Optima, (6 years now). We have water sooooo hard it comes out of the faucet in "Chunks"!--but----- I have a "whole house water softner" on the hot side only, (Miele is connected to the Hot water). Dishes always come out great and I have never used the water softner built into the Miele.

The whole house softner is Rayne, (Similar to Culligan), they change the tank , once/month and I do nuttin, cept "Fork out the cash for it , about $23/month.

Soooo, way I look at it,
"If it ain't broke, don't mess with it"

Well, if I were quoting Shakespeare, I would say it is *painting* the lily.

Short story is yes, if it's too soft the glassware can be filmed or etched. It happened for a while here with the whole-house softener. It's from a combo of too-soft water, detergent and heat. You don't want either the streaky filming or white etching ruins glassware and cannot be rectified.

I called Miele and they guided me through deactivating the softener.

Your glassware will definitely become irreversibly etched over time, if the incoming water is too soft. Ask me how I know . . .

Was it acid also ?

The reason I ask is 3 grains which is not very hard.

But our is also acid. My wife checks the water for the fish.
