Floorplans for Walkout Basements with Decks

burbmomoftwo_gwJune 7, 2014

Having recently purchased a lot for a new home that supports a walkout, Mr. BurbMomOfTwo wants to build a large ranch on top of a large walkout basement. Of course, the main level will have a large deck for a Grill and Entertaining.

Our existing home is currently a two story with a walkout, and the deck in the back really makes the Walkout and the Windows very dark, and doesn't put as much natural light into the basement as I would like. I'm attaching a current photo, where the walkout has large windows on either side of the hot tub.

Any suggestions on how to 'setup' the back of the house to have a deck off the kitchen/dining area, but also still provide alot of natural light for the walkout basement below?

We have that in our current home. We put a covered porch off the dining room, behind the garage.

Design a deck where the area over the walk-out and window is narrow, widening out to a bigger deck located so as not to shade the areas where you want light. You'll have to do a bit more walking, but it can be done.

We want a covered screen porch, but don't want to block the light and views off the back of the house. The free-standing porch will be built off of the back of the garage, with an open walk-way leading to it.

We did that. We were careful to have the deck behind the garage where there were no rooms, so the whole back side...southern side...was full daylight. From the front, it's a one-story house, but from the back, it's a 2 story. With this design, we gain 4 degrees in temp in the winter just from the sun. The lower level, we don't heat or cool (though we have facility to do so) and it maintains temps of 60 to 78 degrees year round.
