Best standard 18' fridge, top freezer for $500 or less

thefrugaloneJuly 28, 2013

Needing a new fridge for my new house :)

I want just the basic 18 cubic foot fridge, top freezer, no ice maker.

What would you recommend? What should I avoid?

I looked at a frigidaire model FRT18G2NW on sale for $399 at a locally owned store. Their appliance prices tend to be in line with lowes, hd, best buy, etc.

I looked for reviews of this fridge online and can't find any good or bad.

As I mentioned in my other post, my splurge is going to be a speed queen washer. I want reliability for value. Not concerned about lots of features or looks.

Thank you!

The Frigidaire is fine.

Appliances are widgets at this price point.

I would just avoid generic Chinese appliances.

Per Consumer Reports, for top freezers without icemakers, only 4 brands are rated, I would guess because the others don't make fridges w/o icemakers. Frigidaire & GE have the fewest repairs, as reported by consumers. Then Kenmore & Whirlpool follow. But Frigidaire & GE are 7%, while Kenmore & Whirlpool are at 8% repairs, so there's not much difference among any of them. Personally, I've read so many bad reviews about other models of GE that I wouldn't buy a GE unless it had the perfect dimensions and was cheaper than everything else.

If you find one you love but it has an icemaker, you should be able to remove it easily. There's just a few screws there. Maybe a line to snip (but maybe not). There's probably instructions on Youtube. (That's what I plan to do. Like you, I don't care for icemakers.)
