How long should it take to install a Japanese toilet?

coolbeanswAugust 16, 2012

I bought the IMAX Dover. It installs like a Toto and I insisted that the plumbing company send a Toto-experienced installer. Two guys have been at it now for 3 (that's right three) hours and aren't done. They did have to move the toilet water value over a couple of inches, but really, The drain was already in place. Is this reasonable? (And @ $145/hour?)

Gasp! I installed a Toto Drake in about a half hour, and I had no idea what I was doing. Got the instructions off the internet because my floor model toilet didn't come with them. So, no, I wouldn't find 3 hours times 2 men reasonable.

They are charging you by the hour, not the job? They have no incentive to do it quickly. Even if they had to move the water valve, it's not more than a 30 minute job for a pro or an experienced DIYer. And the only time you need a 2nd guy on a toilet install is if it's a one piece unit and the one guy has back problems or isn't strong.

I wouldn't expect a "regular" toilet install from a plumber to top $100. Add in the moving the valve, and this possibly being a one piece unit, and you'd be talking $200 tops. If they charge you more than that, with no other issues like the flange being too low etc., then they are milking that hourly rate.

Well you two confirmed what I thought. Their bid was $145 an hour with an estimate that the toilet would take 1 - 2 hours, with the 2nd hour billed in 15 minute increments. Silly me, I thought it would only take an hour.

The joys of home ownership.

I wouldn't have paid it. I would have called the company/boss and worked it out with him.
