garage slab in deep south

landngarageJune 16, 2012

Hello, any tips on what I should specify for a garage slab in the hurricane south? It's 60 by 32 with 2x6 walls and the possibility of a living space in the future in the upstairs "attic" area. (I guess you might call this a "story and a half").

Right now we are planning on a five inch slab with 3000PSI fiber cement with 6"x6" WWR reinforcement and the footers will "be installed using number 4 rod. Center piers will have stirrups to control lateral forces." A 6 mil vapor barrier will be installed under the foundation.

There will be a center beam supported by five 8x8 posts....Thank you.

I would suggest hiring a structural engineer that specilizes in foundations. The few hundred dollars that it will cost you will be well worth it. I think we paid $550 for ours and he took into account the soil etc. that we sit on. Our area is a lot of gravel and has movement so worth every penny. He did a detailed plan of everything needed.
