Ideal AC system

balor123June 29, 2012

My builder will install Trane AC systems. The one they include standard is a 14 seer unit. Though I'm not sure exactly which model it is, I think it's worthwhile to upgrade, no? A friend buying the same floorplan mentioned an HVAC specialist said to buy a one compressor unit with the highest SEER rating. There's just over 30 windows of various sizes and 3500sf in the home in Austin, TX. According to the Trane recommender, the options to consider are: XB14, XL15i, and XL20i. What do you all think? I note the "i" models are the quieter ones but this is a new home and I think they're going to be placed near the garage - do I need for them to be quiet? Is the dual compressor going to be worth it for that climate?

Which model to choose isn't as simple as a Chinese menu and choosing one from Column B. Your HVAC company should calculate your needs based on the home's orientation, the number and type of windows facing which direction, the insulation level, and the total cubic volume of space as well as the different possible zones.
