Appropriate Size Mirror & Sconces for Vanity

IllaJuly 24, 2013

I am trying to work out what size mirror I should purchase to accompany a 48'' vanity.

I am considering:

a 40" w pivot mirror from Pottery Barn (http://www.potterybarn.com/products/kensington-pivot-mirror-wide/?lineid=1&cm_src=E%3Abath-mirrors-wall-cabinets&catalogId=30)

or

a 36" mirror narrow frame mirror (http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Elton-Chrome-Wall-Mirror/5296815/product.html?searchidx=0). The second mirror is so much more affordable.

The sconces I am considering to be placed on both sides of the mirror are a set of:

12''h x 7''w Bellacor sconces
http://www.bellacor.com/productDetail/george-kovacs-p5210-077-cubism-ada-chrome-wall-sconce-603897.htm

or

9.75''h x 4.25" w Pottery Barn sconces
http://www.potterybarn.com/products/hayden-single-sconce/?lineid=2&cm_src=E%3Abathroom-lighting&catalogId=77

What do you think of these proportions?
What combination do you prefer?

I have no photos for you because my bathroom is a total reno. I am considering going with the Godmorgon cabinet from Ikea.

I would love your ideas.

One way for you to determine sizes is to get some graph paper and make a scale drawing of your vanity wall. That will help you select the sizes of your mirrors and lights. As to the design of the frames and sconces that will be more subjective. Pick your favorites and you will enjoy looking at them every day.

What Babka says. Also think about if you want the sconces over the vanity or to either side. With a 48" vanity and a 40" mirror that leaves 4" either side of the vanity. No room to have the lights over the vanity.

Draw it up on graph paper.

Look on houzz and evaluate the mirror, vanity, and light placements. What do you like?

Which means the only possible combination is the 36" mirror with the Pottery Barn sconces.

My contractor actually penciled in the mirror and sconce placement right on the sheet rock. It really helped to have a visual.
