Replacing a built in microwave

grapeleavesJune 8, 2014

I'm replacing a 21 year old built in microwave installed in
a cabinet with a trim kit around it.
when I took off the trim, I see that it is sitting on a metal stand with 11/2" air airspace top and bottom. There is a metal part on top of the microwave to create this airspace.

When I buy a new trim kit , does it come with these metal pieces ?
Do I have to buy a " built in microwave "or can I just buy
a counter top one and then buy a trim kit.

My problem is that the space will only accommodate
a mid size microwave. The hole in the cabinet is 24" across by 17.5" tall and the depth is 17 inches
There isn't much that will fit in that size space.

Does anyone have an experience with these places that make custom trim kits?

The trim kit for built ins includes the metal standoff frame.
I would not advise to buy a countertop and build it in because they have totally different venting requirements, and you could have heat problems.
