ice freezing into blocks

foodonastumpJune 9, 2012

Recent problem with my parents' LG FD, about 5 yrs old I'd guess: Makes ice fine but then it seems to melt and refreeze, ending up with about 1/4-1/2 inch frozen solid at the bottom of the tray and then cubes on top of that, though they are fairly stuck together also.

My guess offhand is that the defrost is working "too well" but I'm wondering if there's any possibility of user error. In case it matters, one thing I've noticed they do is let the bin fill up and then shut off the icemaker until they've used up all the ice.

Suggestions appreciated. TIA!

No, it's typically for ice that sits a while to clump up. I occasionally dump out a block when I haven't used the ice maker in a while. I would suggest they not turn the ice maker off though. If they wait until all the ice is used up, it will take a while for the bin to fill up again. I prefer to have it make ice as I go along.
