Gas Cooktop Install

rileyannJune 10, 2014

My gas cooktop installation sheet says to line the edges of the cutout with heat reflective foil tape such as Scotch Aluminum Foil Tape 425 or 427. This stuff in expensive online. Will any foil tape, such as the multipurpose stuff used to seal duct joints work or do I need something that's flame resistant?

Who knows ? The cooktop manuf. has specified a certain product that they have tested to work.

All alum. tape is expensive.

I'd think other tapes with the same ratings will perform similarly, but they'll cost roughly the same too. You're looking for flame resistance, U.L. listing of whatever that 425 has, and roughly the same mil thickness as the specified product.

Do you have a laminate or corian counter ?

I am confused by the OP. I just googled Scotch 3M 425 Aluminum Foil Tape, and it's $27 at Staples for the 2" x 5 yd. size. I assume you don't need a big roll of tape for a gas cooktop install, so I selected the smallest roll from the Staples drop-down menu. Or, do you need a special size of Aluminum Foil Tape?

Edit: I just did a quick search on eBay for "3M 425 tape", and found 3", 4" and 6" widths (5 yd. roll) all under $30.

Here is a link that might be useful: Scotch 425 Aluminum Foil Tape 2-inch x 5 yds.

I was about to google that tape myself. I guess "expensive" is a relative term.

IMHO, you should use what the manufacturer recommends. Period.
