Painting over Redguard

JeffH42765June 17, 2014

I am installing a tile shower. Using a mesh tape, I covered all the seams between the concrete backer board and the sheet rock. I then applied three coats of Redguard water proofing membrane. The Redguard is also on the edge of the sheetrock. Can the Redguard be painted over with a latex paint? Thanks!

Not easily. Latex paint is water based and will mostlikely peel off the redguard.

It would be a good idea to cut the face of the RG with a razor along the tiled edge, then peel off the RG if possible. There may be damage to the drywall.

OR

Paint over the RG with Zinsser Guardz, then float the area with drywall mud and treat as normal.

FOr those reading along, we normally run the tile outside the 'wet area' a few inches, with the waterproofing ending before the tile ends. The tile then can overlap into the already painted drywall, giving a crisp, clean line.
