Recess a counter depth fridge?

mcfromctMay 16, 2013

Is there any reason we should NOT recess a counter-depth fridge about 3" into the wall behind it to gain a little more space between the fridge and kitchen island/stools? The depth of the "counter depth" fridge is 31 1/4"... It is the GE Cafe CYE23TSDSS.

Make sure you will have enough clearance on the hinge side.

Fori is not pleased

I did it due to changing my plan from a builtin to freestanding fridge and forgetting to tell my cabinet guy (oops). Just treat it like a fatty fridge--measure twice, cut once, allow for an outlet and ventilation as required, and all that. :)

Depends on the fridge. A lot of them won't let you open the doors enough to get the bins out unless the door can swing past 90 degrees which it can't do if it's in a recess or against a wall.
