How do you know if grout is really sealed??

Phobie PrivettDecember 30, 2007

I have new tile and it was down a couple of weeks before we moved in. Of course, the tilers left us to seal it, which we did not do until we moved in and the house had been thoroughly cleaned. I used a product from Lowe's and went over my bathroom twice, kitchen once (so far) and I swear I am already seeing stains and water seems to be soaking in. Should it bead up? I'm worried I've done all this work for nothing and the grout may already be ruined. Some spots my steam cleaner won't clean out, nor any cleaner I've used so far. I'm sure I probably need more than 1-2 coats. Any advice??

At the John Bridge tile forum, they suggest letting some water stand on the grout surface for about 5 to 10 minutes, and wiping dry. If it takes more than 10 minutes to totally dry, you are probably in need of another application of sealer. It's not uncommon to experience surface wetting (darkening) of the grout, but it should dry back out relatively quickly.
