sink cutout inside large format tile?

TwoStepsBackMay 23, 2013

Can a tile expert please help me figure out if it's possible to cut a large hole inside a larger, single porcelain tile, for a countertop? The tile is 48 X 24". The cutout will need to be 21 X 16". So there will be a minimum of 4" of tile between the cut and the tile edge.

Will the tile will be too likely to crack?

The edge of the hole will be well hidden under the rim of the sink, which is pretty wide, so it doesn't need to be perfect.

Someone with some experience can cut a sink cutout in the tile with a multi tool (Fein or clone). Someone without experience using the tool may crack the tile (a couple of times) so a LOT more waste and cutting waste needs to be factored into this than you may be planning. (Large tiles always have more % of cutting waste than smaller ones do, and yours is large enough to need a doozy of a waste number. I'd say closer to the 25% than the standard 10% overage will be needed. And you will need a hellaciously good quality tile saw to do any cuts on that at all.)
