help with floor tile to match slate shower

wncangMay 25, 2013

We are set to close on a house in two weeks. The house has two matching master bathrooms. The bathrooms each have a no threshold slate shower. An elderly lady currently owns the house, and the bathroom floors are carpeted with the exception of the shower. I very much want to have tile flooring installed as soon as possible, the idea of carpet in the bathroom is kind of gross. Anyway, what do you think would complement the slate? I would prefer going with something lighter than the slate. Slate isn't my favorite, but that is what we have to work with. Ideally, I would prefer a lighter color floor.. Houzz has a photo of a slate shower with a travertine bathroom floor. I like that look. Your suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks very much

I say go for it. I really like that Houzz photo, I've noticed it before and like the clean lines with the rustic warmth of the wood and the slate. I'd do porcelain though, as there are so many great porcelains. They are easier to work with than stone. Porcelain is more forgiving to slight movement of the joist. A stone floor has to be very ridged and may take some extra beefing up of the joist. I had to do that with my joist when I put in a slate floor. Regarding porcelain, I have selected a tile that I'm told has a repeat every 100 tiles. I like that detail. I don't like looking at a floor and seeing many tiles with the same repeat over and over.
