Efficient placement of washer/dryer in laundry room

kymikeApril 11, 2012

We moved into our house about 3 months ago. The entry to the house off of the attached garage is a combination mud room / laundry room. One of the requests for the builder was to provide us with all interior and exterior doorways at 36". When the plans were re-drawn to accomodate that, the builder did not take into account that washers and dryers generally cannot be placed tight against the wall due to plumbing and vents. We didn't realize this until after we moved in and now have our washer and dryer covering a portion of one of the doorways (opposite end of the mudroom from the garage entrance).

What alternatives are there in plumbing and venting to allow us to place the washer and dryer back closer to the wall? I have seen the recessed dryer vent boxes that sit in the wall cavity. that essentially allow for zero clearance. Are there other alternatives? I have not found anything that works like that for a washer.

BTW, our master BR closet sits on the other side of the wall that the washer and dry back up to. We have contemplated taking 6" out of the closet depth to provide more room in the the laundry room. The basement area underneath is unfinished, so accessing plumbing and electric is not an issue.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd probably take out the 6" from the closet, if it was there.

I have a closet for my laundry so looked into this. ELectrolux front loaders have a recessed bottom so they can be pushed up against the wall. I had a few inches to spare so ended up with an LG toploader for my washer due to closet door side clearances.
