microwaves too many to choose from!!!!

Supermom74April 10, 2013

In search of a good microwave that I can put on a shelf within my kitchen cabinets. I was going to do the whole trim kit thing but have noticed that some people just put a counertop microwave on a shelf and as long as there is about an inch all around for ventilation that should be good.

This is one microwave that I am looking at: Panasonic NN-SD797S Genius "Prestige" 1.6 cuft 1250-Watt Sensor Microwave with Inverter Technology & Blue Readout, Stainless Steel

Does anyone have this?
Recommend any others?

Thanks :)

If you want to put it on a shelf in your upper cabinets , you don't have very many choices at all. Most will be too deep to fit on a standard 12"-14" deep wall cabinet shelf.

I just went through this decision when my 18 month old Frigidaire counter MW's magnetron failed. Don't get a Frigidaire, although they are narrow. The girl at Best Buy said they stopped carrying Frigidaire because of all the fails. The two brands that I found had the best ratings were Sharp and Panasonic. I couldn't get the Genius, which is the one I would have chosen, too, because it was too big (19 1/2 " deep), and the smaller Panasonics only came in black and white. I got a small "silver gray" Sharp, and so far, so good.

Are you putting the Genius on a shelf in your lowers? Then it would fit. As xedos said, it won't fit in uppers unless they're over 20" deep.

You can get around this limitation by bolting a deeper (18"-19") shelf onto the bottom of your upper cab. I have a purpose designed micro shelf from the RTA company that supplied my cabinets, and that is how the MW cab is differentiated from a regular upper. Should be an easy DIY retrofit.

Mine is the Sharp R-309YV. The V stands for silver. K would be black, and W would be white. It's 14.8" deep in total, but that includes the parts that stick out in front. It's 1000W, 1.1 cu ft.

You can also solve the problem of shallow upper shelves by using Ikea cabinetry, which has a microwave shelf made a bit deeper. Link below.

We inherited one, but I don't like the microwave sitting that high. Turns out it's the perfect spot for the toaster, the coffee grinder, and the cans of coffee and teabags: so much that so we plan to replicate it in our new kitchen!

THanks everyone for all of the input!

Right now I am leaning towards either the GE profile spacemaker 2 and the panasonic. Both have trim kit options if I choose to make it a more built in feel.
