Walnut slab counter - what finish?

sochiApril 9, 2012

I'm using a walnut slab as a counter in our master bath. Mongoct mentioned in an earlier post that it should be film finished on all sides. Exactly what type of finish is required? My brother-in-law is a cabinet maker and can probably help us out with finishing it if necessary, but I don't think he has used walnut in an application like this before.

I'm thinking a marine varnish of some kind.

Epifanes' marine varnish finishes are very nice. We plan to use it on a mahogany counter.

Waterlox will work -- our kitchen island counterop (fabricated, oddly enough, by my own cabinetmaker BIL) is finished with Waterlox. 5 years later, it's held up great; just this month we touched up around the sink (undermount) with a bit more Waterlox. I finished it myself after he planed it really, really smooth. Not difficult at all.

I'm in CA -- Waterlox is not easy to find here but Woodcraft does carry it.
