Drain in laundry room for overflow on 1st floor i

Central79March 8, 2013

We are building one story house with conditioned crawl space. Laundry room on first floor over crawl space.

The Plumber no longer recommends these drains because of possible insect infestations coming from end of pipe opening outside the crawl space. Says screens on end of pipe have to be checked and do not always work.

Any one deal with this problem. I would think an overflow drain is still preferable to having the possibility of water leaking into the conditioned crawl space.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Put it on your yearly maintenance, or tie it into your drain system for the rest of the house (and then you'll need monthly maintenance to put water into the trap).

Or, replace your water heater regularly enough so as to avoid a leak?

Also have you seen these? Has your plumber? Are they allowed in your jurisdiction?

"then you'll need monthly maintenance to put water into the trap"

Or instal a trap primer to something that is used frequently.

Like the washer itself.

I don't think it's a water heater leak that is the concern, but instead the washer and the connections. In any case, just hook the floor drain to the DWV system and provide a primer from the laundry room taps. Laundry room floor drains are mandatory in at least one jurisdiction in my area.
