Change exterior siding and trim color

ssjoshiFebruary 19, 2012

Hi all, hoping to get some reassuring insight from the forum.

Our new house is being built. They put on the roof and wood siding/trim just got painted.

There will be brick on the exterior that is not installed yet.

We realized the roof shingles and siding color we picked does not match at all! The siding and trim has been painted using oil based stain. Painter says that only choice to lighten the trim color is to repaint using a latex based paint.

Has anyone done this before, any advice would be highly appreciated!

I'm no painting expert, but I'm not wild about putting latex over an oil product. I wonder if he can put a gripping product on first, or an acid to help the paint stick.

Finally, is it that bad? Do the colors blend and go together better than you might think? Sometimes I over analyze colors and try to get it perfect when it looks great the way it is, if I try to see it from that perspective. I'd sure ask lots of friends who will give their honest opinion (and don't lead them to your conclusion when you phrase the question hah) and see if anyone else even notices it.

Thanks! I am thinking the same thing - we'll probably wait until the brick is on before trying to repaint.
