Caulking around pebble shower panm HELP!

LL123March 5, 2012

Hi, all,

I need some help on caulking around the shower pan.

I have a cut pebble shower pan that's installed about a month ago. It has been working fine but some white stuffs showing up around the pan. It seems like the clear caulking is turning white in some sections. My contractor came to replace the caulking, but a week later, the same area still turns white.

We've been careful and waited for 3 days after he finished the 2nd caulking to use that shower, so that it is dry. My husband suspects that because it is a pebble shower, although cut and flat, maybe water sneaks thru and goes behind the silicon caulking.

In this case, do we still need to caulking where the walls meet the floor? (We are in CA so underneath the shower pan, there is hot mop.)

If we still need the caulking, what to do to make sure it doesn't turn white again.

I'll try to post a photo if I can figure out how.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Jen

You're not caulking the floor of a shower to prevent water entry (if the shower was constructed properly). Water that gets behind the tiles, pebbles, in the grout, etc.....Should be able to slowly drain out.
The caulk should be in the corners/edges. Just to match the grout, yet, be more flexible than grout.

If it's turning white due to moisture behind it, it may be coming from the porosity of the tiles and grout above?
