For those with two story rooms - what are your dimensions?

snuffycuts99February 15, 2014

Trying to figure out an adequate size for a two story family room. Was thinking 20x19 but was hoping to get some feedback from others with two story rooms. Do you think that's big enough? It will have two walls...one with lots of windows facing the backyard and the other with a floor to ceiling fireplace centered on the wall. Opposite the fireplace it is open to the kitchen. A catwalk is on the other side between the foyer.

I'm no expert but 20 x19 seems too square and too small for a 2 story ceiling.

There have been some discussions in the past about two story high rooms. They provide wow factor, but they also make for rooms that are hard to heat and not necessarily comfortable, and difficult to decorate. Further balconies or lofts leading to bedrooms also transmit a lot of noise.

Our 2 story Great Room will be 23' x 21'. We feel that is a good size for our home. Our ceiling is coffered and will be 19' high.

Ours is more like 1 and 1/2 story, or maybe 1 3/4. It's 23'4" wide and 17'4" deep, not including the built ins and fireplace (those add another 2 feet)

If you want to get the proportions correct, then study the golden mean and the proportions in classical architecture. Most get it badly wrong these days.
