2004 Forester, big or little oil filter

jerry_njApril 15, 2008

When I first changed the oil in my (then) new 2004 Forester 2.5, the Fram guide listed PH3593A, which is a good bit larger than what the factory put on the car. I installed it anyway and continued to do so, then tonight I stopped by WalMart to pick up a couple of filters, and for the "heck of it" checked the guide, it now lists a different filter, and it is one that is much smaller, like the one that came from Subaru. I purchased two more PH3593A, I figure bigger is better. I did, of course when this first came up, checked to see that the gasket is the same size and location relative to the mounting inlet to the filter (the threaded pipe stub).

Any views on the subject of physical size.

The larger filter holds more and filters more oil. We used to try to get the largest oil filter we could find to fit
our cars when we were road racing. sometime you can get the larger filter on but getting it off with enough clearance for the wrench was a problem.
