What happens if you overfill the auto tranny

Pooh BearFebruary 17, 2007

1997 Ford Escort Sedan.

What happens if you overfill the automatic transmission.

Yesterday I checked the fluid and it needed some.

I poured half a quart in and it looked like it still

needed some. So I poured the rest of the quart in but

when I tried to check it I couldn't get a good reading.

I think after filling there was still a lot of fluid

inside the dipstick tube and when I pulled the stick out

it was covered with fluid. I meant to check it again when

I got home yesterday but forgot. I figured by then any

fluid in the tube would have had time to drain down.

If by chance I overfilled it what damage could it do.

Apparently I have a very slow leak since I had to add fluid

a few months ago. If I overfilled it how can I remove some.

Crawling under it to remove the pan is not an option for me.

Thanks.

The two concerns I know about are if it's too full, the fluid can foam. Air bubbles in any hydraulic system isn't a good thing. The other thing is if you have a gasket or seal leak, it will leak more. I doubt you did anything to hurt it yet. Park your vehicle on a level surface and check it again taking into consideration if the fluid is hot, cold, or warm. If it is too full, siphon some out. No big deal.

I checked it today after driving about 75 miles.

The dipstick has 4 notches on it.
Between the lower 2 is a notation of 20 degrees celcius.
Between the upper 2 is a notation of 65 degrees celcius.
The level appeared to be right at the lowest mark.
Shouldn't it have been between the upper two marks?

I'm assuming the bottom 2 marks are the fluid level cold
and the upper 2 marks are the fluid level at operating temperature.

Thanks for the info.
