Help tiles cracking!

zeitgastFebruary 1, 2014

Hi all need help/advice. Just got this email from my GC

"the shower door isnt working out with the glass tiles, when they are drilling and installing shields they are cracking tiles, so one alternative at this point is to install a small (1 1/4") trim piece/ header across top of panel and door , this will reduce the stress on the glass tile, I did call my tile installer to replace these damaged pieces, ok let me know your thoughts. "

How could this be? I've seen many examples of frameless glass showers and glass subway!

They're using the wrong bits; they need a diamond. I'd make a jig and hot-melt it to the tile to keep it from drifting. See the link:

Thanks. That's what what i thought but it turns out drilling wasn't the problem. My GC forgot to add framing to the outside wall. The tiles are cracking when they try to use a plate. Looks like we won't be able to go frameless after all. Unless we rip out everything and start over I suppose. Supposed to get our certificate of occupancy nxt week though. Grr

If your GC forgot to add framing I would make him redo EVERYTHING on his dime. Is this your only bathroom? If you have a useable bathroom you should still get your occupancy cert.
