BU students creating a new walker to reduce falls

bostonuOctober 25, 2009

I lost my grandmother in March due to a fall when using a walker. She underwent hip surgery and a few weeks later passed away. This semester, my team and I at Boston University are creating a new walker to decrease falls in the elderly, which will increase quality of life and reduce medical costs. I was inspired by grandmother's walker to create a new and improved one. As part of our walker development, we need to create a marketing plan. We have a survey that can be filled out by caregivers or healthcare professionals to help us make this walker as beneficial as possible for the user. If any of you are willing to help us please take our survey by clicking on the link below. Thank you for your time!

Start here. This has many of your ideas already incorporated. Forget the springs in the legs -- hazardous. Forget the cup-holder, too. Many/most walker users have other problems going on, too. Avoid as many confusion-generators as possible.

Many people and manufacturers have considered what you're considering before. If you're starting from scratch, you're making a mistake. Build on what's already been done. And be aware the marketplace is incredibly diverse as far as what's beneficial and what isn't from user-to-user.

Here is a link that might be useful: Best walker design currently available IMHO.
