Solid piece over tiled curb?

jaidogFebruary 18, 2012

We're in the process of building a shower, but will not be redoing the rest of the bathroom for another year. At that time, we plan on getting a solid surface (eg granite) curb top to match the vanity tops. So, for now, can we install a full tile curb and then add the solid surface on top of the tile curb at a later date?

Will you be putting in a shower door now or using a curtain while you wait to do the rest of the bathroom? A door would be installed to come right down to the curb so adding something on top later would mean altering your door, if that can be done. I don't know whether granite can be installed over tile but as long as it's level, perhaps it can. Since tile is a different thickness than granite, I don't think removing the top tiles to replace them later with granite would be the answer. If you don't yet know which granite you will use for your vanity, how about installing a remnant piece of granite to be replaced later? It would be the same thickness so your door measurement should work out.

First, yes, it can be set over the tile, so long as the glass doesn't get set. Secondly, that curb better NOT be level! It SHOULD be pitching into the shower.

Oops, you're right, of course, Bill!! That's the second time I've said that wrong. When I assured my shower door guy that he'd find our curb to be level, he informed me that it should be pitched in toward the shower. Fortunately, my tilesetter knew what he was doing and it is. I guess I should just stick to choosing colors! LOL
