Vintage egg gathering basket?

troyadam90October 17, 2011

Hello all, I recently found this basket which I find very beautiful, anyway I would love to learn what it was used for, what it is made of, what style of weaving technique is it, opinions on when this was crafted and do you think the lid and basket are made at the same time for each other.

Hello. I came here looking for info and saw this basket post...

I am a weaver so can tell you it's a flat-bottom ribbed (Appalachian style) basket with what appears to be a wooden lid indicative of a picnic basket. It does not appear to be old to me -- in fact, the shine on the weavers makes me think it's reed that's been coated with something (like polyurethane) or that it was woven with artificial materials (i.e., plastic).

I was going to post pretty well the same thing as party music....but I am not a weaver. Her views add credibility to mine.
As to use....how big is it?
