old coins

kate38October 3, 2010

I've read some posts about old coins and think I have an idea of value or lack thereof, but just wondered if someone with expertise can tell me if any of these coins of my deceased grandmother have any value other than face. None is in mint or even good condition: Indian head pennies from 1895, Indian head nickels with buffalo on back--dates are worn off, dimes from the 1930's, half dollars from 1943 and '44, Kennedy half dollars, some old Turkish coins and a few silver certificates. Also a $2 bill from 1953 (creased). Thank you for whatever you can tell me.

I'm no expert, but in coins, condition is everything. There is a system of grading coins that coin dealers and collectors use to set a price on their coins. It goes from 1 to 70, the latter being very, fine, uncirculated coins.

The dimes and half dollars are silver-thus worth much more the face.
