Can someone identify this antique item?

bboopmAugust 22, 2012

I would like to know if anyone can tell me what the attached item is. It was in a box lot I purchased at an auction. At first I thought it might be some type of thread or yarn holder. It is about 7 inches long, and on one end (the end with the lips), the side 'pulls up' maybe about a half inch, as if to load something in it. One side also has what appear to be brackets so mount this somewhere. Any ideas? Appreciate the help. Thank you

There could be missing pieces that I am just not aware of. I appreciate the suggestions.
