Can I Replace 3 Handle Shower Faucet Without Damaging Tile?

cruzinpattisJanuary 26, 2014

My bathroom was remodeled back in 1986
Like to do a semi-update in my bathroom.
Want to replace the outdated builder Oak vanity cabinet and Formica counter top.
With that, a new sink faucet.
Which means replacing the shower handles to match.
My fear is damaging the extincting tile.
Which I don't want to...On a budget.

Is there a way of just replacing the 3 handles without tearing down tile or the wall behind?

I'd go faucet shopping first and see what you like. Don't buy a cheapie. After that, decide if you really need them to match. If so, that may tell you what you need to do in the tub area.

Do you have any replacement tile? Can you find some that are close enough?

I'd look at a single lever for each. If you go that route, you're going to need replacement tile and a skilled plumber.

They sell "universal" trim kits in every box store. They don't fit every brand as well as the original though. That leaves you not changing the valve out. It's enough to get you by for resale, but if you're going to be living there for any amount of time, bite the bullet and open up the wall from the other direction and change the valves out to the newer and safer anti scald protected ones.

What brand is your shower/tub valve and faucet? It looks like Kohler. If it is Kohler, you can replace the handles with new Kohler handles. Once you decide on your lav faucet, you can use the tub spout and/or shower head from that collection - or find a similar design from another manufacturer. If your current tub spout is metal, be careful in selecting a new one because most mid ranged spouts are plastic.

I like your faucets for a mid century bath - they are right in line. The knobs are still contemporary - spouts have changed.

get back with your valve manufacturer so we can help you.
