Is enclosing beneath the stairs with drywall required by code?

maverick9001November 21, 2006

I had my final building inspection and the inspector asked me to drywall the space beneath the stairs. Its a small area and can be used for storage. None of my neighbours or friends have drywalled beneath the stairs.

Is it required by code ?

I would imagine you'd have to talk to your city or county folks as codes vary widely from place to place.

If the space below the stairs is accessible for storage, yes it is required to be drywalled for firecode reasons.
