What is this piece of glass meant to be?

mileadayMay 19, 2010

I inherited this small piece from my Mom who passed away at 82. I don't know what it is or how long it belonged to her. It is only 4" high and open on both sides. It seems like it should have something to go with it but I can't find anything to match. Any ideas? Thanks and I hope the pics work.

Too tall for a toothpick...it's a small vase and my best guess is that it was made as a souvenir for the Chicago World's Fair....and that it may have had some gold flashing on it which isw orn or washed off....but that seems unlikely that a piece like that would get that much wear.
Guessing it dates to about 1939 and is a repro of an earlier EAPG pattern.

That's from the "Chicago Merchandise Company", which was at 808-10 Market St. Philadelphia PA during at least some of its history. They were big enough to have things made especially for them.

It is unlikely to have anything to do with the World's Fair and quite likely to be part of a "fairy light".

Those Fairy lights you showed are from the mid 1970's I know because I have one and I know from whom and when I bought it...I believe the year was 1977 and it was sold as part of a group of stuff for a high school club fundraiser.
You're right it likely wasn't a souvenir because there is nothing commemorative on it.
I don't know when the Chicago Merchandise store was in business.

Chicago Merchandise Company ... I found references to it from 1878 and 1900 but don't know when it went out of business.

The link was for "this is a fairy light/lamp" purposes, not ID.
