Jean or Jeune Gille Figurine

beachnutMay 18, 2011

Hi, I'm helping my Nana sell some of her antiques and I'm having trouble getting more information on a figurine from Jean Gille (aka Jeune Gille). It took forever but I finally identified the maker's mark. Now I'm trying to figure out what this is. Is he a clown? Harlequins were known to be mute, so is that what he is and that's why he's sticking his tongue out? Does anyone know much about this figurine or have a better suggestion for another message board?

Thanks

Having trouble adding photo. I will repost!

It's Pagliacci, from the opera.

Wow....
Paglacci is Italian for "clown"....the opera is about a troupe of Comedia del Arte players, one of whom is the harlequin character or the clown or Paglacci.
so....he's a clown...
I don't know a thing about Jeune Gille figurines....but he's beautiful! How big is he and cam we see a good picture of the mark on the bottom?

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was at a dead end for so long. I added some more pictures, including the mark. My nana couldn't find any info on him either back when she was going to sell him. Jean Gille died back in the late 1860's. This figurine is almost 6' tall and about 2' thick. He has so much character. I'm trying to sell him for her but all I know is it was made by Gille. You've helped so much!
