We remodeled Full Bath into a Half Bath

annaleefFebruary 28, 2010

We took our most frequently used bathroom between the kitchen and the office and removed the tub/shower to create a more spacious half bath. In 16 years neither of us used the tub we inherited from previous owner. We gained counter and storage space. Hardest part was relocating the toilet to a different wall, which foiled our plans to have a one piece Kohler Cimarron there because of the rough-in size. We ended up with an American Standard Cadet 3, which is Ok, but not our favorite.

We remodeled this room at the same time as our masterbath and laundry, so the hard part was keeping all pieces labeled so that the wrong tiles did not show up in the wrong spaces.

We chose a southwestern color palette with warm and cool colors, but they do not photograph well and seem washed out in these shots. The mirror - trying to decide whether it is the right one, as it covers too much of the stone wall. Just found an iron trim Quoizel mirror that has a lighter look. The counter is crema marfil marble, the wall is Scabos split-face travertine, the Waterworks sink is copper, the faucet is Fontaine bronze, the cabinet is Cabico, and the floor saltillo/terra cotta hexagonals.

Thanks for your comment, Judithn. Still trying to work out accessories and towel management system to de-clutter the vanity! Might add a vase for fresh flowers as well.

Thank you, stlouie.
We just bought a new mirror which hides less of the travertine wall. Will install it later this week and might move the heavier leather mirror to the side wall. We'll see which looks better.

What a great job you did. What color did you paint the bathroom?

Great job, and very brave of you. I really want to downsize our 2nd bathroom to a half bath because it opens directly into the sitting room and there's absolutely no sense of privacy. Removing the tub would allow much greater separation of the bathroom from the living space.

We mostly use the 2nd bathtub to wash cat boxes and bird feeders, and wouldn't a utility sink in the basement be much better for that purpose?

Our financial analyst and others caution us against the change because they think it would lessen the value of the house. Does anyone here have thoughts on that topic?
