Floor question - putting tiles

rmslayerSeptember 6, 2006

I plan on putting tiles on my basement concrete floor. I heard it's a bad idea to put files directly onto the concrete. What are your thoughts on this?

I have ceramic tiles applied directly to concrete. They have been there 12 years now with no trouble...

western_pa_luann: Have you gotten water in your basement since the tiles have been installed? We think we've fixed a water problem, but I don't want to take any chances. I'd like to put a flooring in that won't be a problem if the floor gets some water. Would ceramic tile be a good choice?

Nope - no water.
It does get damp but we run a dehumidifier from spring to fall.

I don't know WHAT would happen if water soaked the tiles!

rmslayer are you considering ceramic tile or vinyl tile? Any rough spot or pebble will protrude through the vinyl tile if placed directly on cement.
